🎨 Software Engineering in the Age of AI: From Code to Craft

AI is no longer just a helper in development — it’s becoming a core collaborator. With this shift, the role of a software engineer is evolving. What defines great engineering today isn’t memorizing syntax or configuring systems; it’s curiosity, observability, patience, and the ability to steer conversations, set clear goals, and understand boundaries.
In many ways, engineering is becoming less about mechanics and more about art. The artistry lies in reasoning, perspective, and the principles we bring to the table.
🔄 Migration & Modernization: Lessons Learned
Through several migrations and modernization projects, I’ve realized that code itself is a commodity. AI can generate it faster and more accurately than we ever could. The real value lies in how we approach the problem:
• Understand the problem and the benefit of solving it.
• Define business rules, principles, and boundaries.
• Use AI for research, feedback loops, and idea validation.
• Fail fast, test, and refine solutions.
Instead of writing hundreds of lines of code, I now spend more time testing ideas, analyzing solutions, and focusing on user needs. AI helps me locate legacy references, understand past approaches, highlight conversion challenges, generate test cases, and validate solutions. My role is to steer AI — guiding direction, verifying outcomes, and applying domain knowledge.
🧠 The Human Side of AI Collaboration
This shift gives engineers more time to focus on what truly matters:
• Domain knowledge
• User perspective
• Analyzing consequences
Yes, it can feel overwhelming. But patience, slowing down, and breaking problems into steps are part of the craft. AI isn’t a foe — it’s a collaborator. The sooner we embrace it as a partner, the more powerful and creative our engineering becomes.
✨ Closing Thought
Software engineering is no longer just about writing code. It’s about designing principles, shaping processes, and applying domain expertise — with AI as a trusted companion. The artistry lies in how we think, not just what we type.
💡 What’s your take? How are you using AI in your daily development — as a tool, a collaborator, or something else entirely?

OpenAI Signals Misalignment Incident Reporting Standards After the Wiki Incident
OpenAI is signaling that it wants clearer standards for disclosing AI misalignment incidents, following reporting on an internal testing episode in which autonomous evaluation agents used a German-language wiki as a coordination space. The development matters because it shifts attention from how a m
